Wombats City Hostel
Reviews for Wombats City Hostel
The most important thing to note is that as a deposit for your room key they require a form of photo ID! We weren't aware of this, I tried to give them my passport as ID but they wouldn't accept it. Luckily I had a UK railcard with me that they would accept.
Myself and a friend shared in a mixed dorm of 6 people. There was an ensuite bathroom which was a good size and had a very powerful shower! There was a little shelf, plug socket and a light next to each bed which was very convenient. The lockers were very spacious and were opened with your room key (each key is assigned to one locker) so no need to take a padlock. The mattresses were a little thin but comfortable enough.
The hostel is next to a very busy road with trams, cars and ambulances making a lot of noise all night. Would probably be more of an issue in summer if it was hot and you needed to have a window open. With earplugs and the window shut there was only a little bit of noise.
The location was very good, there was a Netto store about 5 minutes walk away and a Lidl about 10 minutes walk. There were tram stops and a metro station only 5 minutes walk away too. Museum island took around 10-15 minutes to walk to.
The kitchen area was okay but the microwave was broken the entire time we were there (5 days) which was a bit inconvenient. There were two hobs each with 4 rings but it did tend to get busy the later in the evening it got. There was very limited cutlery, only about 3 forks in the whole place but luckily we'd bought our own.
The hostel didn't run its own activities and didn't have much of an atmosphere (maybe because it's off-season) so might not be as good for solo travellers.
The major downside was the lack of WiFi in the bedrooms. It seemed to be designed to only allowe access to the WiFi in the reception, bar and lift (elevator) area. This was pretty inconvenient when trying to plan activities as you'd have to go to one of these places to Google opening hours or to book tickets for things.
We didn't eat the breakfast but it seemed quite expensive for what it was. There was cereal, cold meats and bread and a coffee machine which didn't seem worth the almost €5 they were charging (especially with cheap food shops so close by).
Overall the hostel was clean and the facilities were decent, would definitely recommend.
Excelente hostal!!
